Stars, Moon, and Wine Ramblings - August 4, 2023

The Sturgeon moon is waning in perfect time to give us a clear look at the Perseid Meteor shower . This meteor shower can be seen by watching the northwestern sky and is peaking on August 13th when the moon will be at 10% of it’s light.

This has relatively nothing to do with winemaking unless you are interested in biodynamics. If so, you may have racked your wine this past week during the full moon.

Biodynamic winemakers do not use filtration or fining for their wines, instead they use racking only to clarify their wine. These winemakers rack during the full moon which increases the gravitational pull and is thought to allow the sediment to settle more fully.

While we use racking alone to clarify our red wines, I haven’t racked according to the moon phases. Since I do believe people can be affected by the full moon, and I do believe I am one of those people, it may only cause chaos in the winery. Is anyone up for racking wine during the upcoming Blue Moon?

Today will be a beautiful afternoon to coast down the hill to the farm in Ivy and enjoy the company of cows, the Millers, Ivy the bus, and each other — over a bottle of wine and a beautiful grazing board. All red wines by the bottle will be 10% off today. Consider stopping out to the farm and buying some to take home!

Peace, love and many meteors!
